Chapter Seventeen

Eric picked up his tux from the dry cleaners for the big event that night. He hated wearing one. They always seemed too tight in the shoulders, and definitely too hot. Truth be told, he wished he could be in his jeans, picking Blaine up for a night of Abuelita’s and dancing afterwards. On his way to his parent’s house to drop by some contracts for his dad to sign, he wondered if the old salsa club his parents used to go to was still open.

He walked through the front door and yelled his hello. The sound echoed in the house, and he heard Loraine from upstairs yell his name back.

“Do you have the Drew contracts?”

“Yeah, where’s Papá?”

“He’s not home from the office yet.” She stuck her head out into the hallway upstairs as he ascended.

“Should I take them to the office?”

“No, he said he’d be home soon.”

His mother came out of the master bath in a slip and her hair up in curlers. He hadn’t seen her in the process of getting ready, and it turned him into a fascinated little boy. Was she always so small? He turned away out of respect and looked at Loraine.

“Why aren’t you ready yet?” Loraine glared at him.

“I needed to drop the contracts off and pick up my tux.”

“Well, go get ready. We can’t be late. Any of us.” She turned in her own robe and hair up in hot curlers and slammed the door to her room.

Eric’s eyebrows rose. “Do you think she’s nervous?” he asked his mom over his shoulder. His mother slipped on a robe and came to kiss him on the cheek.

“Oh, sí. She’s miserable.”

“I’m fine!” came Loraine’s frustrated voice through the door.

“I think she asked a young man to the opening,” his mother whispered. Eric looked down at her, surprised.

“Really? Loraine knows a young man? I mean, socially? Is that possible?”

His mother’s eyes twinkled, and she smiled at the closed door where Loraine’s music got louder, as did the bumps and curses of a woman in a state of frenzy.

“Sí, but I think he might have said no.”

“Oof, that’s too bad.” Eric meant it.

Had all his talk about trying to find happiness outside of the office switched something on inside of his normally stoic sister? Had she put her heart out there and some guy had dashed it? His jaw popped when he clenched it, and he wondered if he needed to get an address. He hadn’t felt protective over his sister since they were kids.

“We’ll see. I’m not sure who it is, or if he comes, but we’ll know it’s him if her mood improves.” His mother turned to him and ruffled his hair as though he was seven. “And you? Are you bringing someone?”

“Sí, Mamá,” he said softly and felt a lump in his throat.

“Oh, she must be important to see your face like that. Why are you afraid? Don’t you like her?”

“I do like her, Mamá, very much. She’s not like anyone I know.
